The Rankings Explained

When you switch to All-time movies view, OneLastWatch filters the leaving-soon list to only show films that appear on major critic-compiled rankings β€” and sorts them by rank so the most acclaimed films appear first. Here's where those rankings come from.

Best 1,000 Movies of All Time

Sourced from They Shoot Pictures, Don't They? (TSPDT) β€” widely considered the most comprehensive and prestigious aggregate of cinematic greatness on the internet. Often called β€œthe list of lists,” TSPDT compiles thousands of critic polls, festival ballots, and filmmaker lists into a single ranked canon of the 1,000 greatest films ever made. As of its 21st edition (2026), it draws on 17,747 unique lists, including the full Sight & Sound archive and over 330 Letterboxd ballots from filmmakers such as Bong Joon-ho, Denis Villeneuve, Kelly Reichardt, and Pedro AlmodΓ³var.

Unlike IMDb or Letterboxd, which are driven by user popularity, TSPDT is critic-driven β€” it prioritises historical influence, artistic innovation, and critical consensus. For many film lovers, working through the TSPDT 1,000 is a cinematic education in itself.

21st Century's Most Acclaimed Films

Also sourced from They Shoot Pictures, Don't They?, this companion list covers the top 1,000 most critically acclaimed films released from 2000 onwards, updated annually. Now in its 19th edition (2026), it uses the same rigorous methodology as the all-time list but adds 7,329 end-of-year ballots from over 2,000 critics and filmmakers β€” an average of 282 ballots per year, spanning 2000–2025.

Where the all-time list is stable and slow to change, this list is a living document: every year dozens of new titles enter as fresh critical consensus forms. It's an essential companion for anyone trying to stay current with the best cinema being made today.
